Gone to See the King

Brian McCaskill

I’d gone to see the king play and he played
yeah, he played
Black suit and all, yeah, he played.
And I’d gone to see the faces pass by my car window
And I’d gone to see faces on the train passing by
Faces that changed
Looking somehow sad
Wearing bulletproof vests made of newspaper headlines that read:
“KEEP THE WAR GOING”
and
“THE YOUNG ONES TAKE MORE CHANCES”.

But anyway, just for one second, one moment
I thought I saw a face in my window
Familiar, staring at me
A reflection, something I’ve seen before
A fine face
Staring pass me, again.
(Nothing can be saved
when you’re asleep at the wheel
Nothing can be saved
no matter how many shooting stars there are.)
